Shenyang

Four Pagodas

In 1643, about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) outside the ancient Shengjing (now Shenyang) city's outer walls, four pagodas accompanied by four temples were built: North Pagoda/Falun Temple, South Pagoda/Guangci Temple, East Pagoda/Yongguang Temple, and West Pagoda/Yanshou Temple. Each pagoda and temple shared identical dimensions and design. The pagodas stand over 26 meters (85 feet) tall. When the dilapidated West Pagoda was pulled down in 1968, an underground palace was discovered and lots of valuable cultural relics unearthed. During the 1980's the East, South, and West pagodas were restored. Of the four pagodas/temples, only the North has been well preserved. The West Pagoda/Yanshou Temple was rebuilt in 1998.
